This is another one of those, 'The devs probably already thought of this' threads. But I thought I'd state it any way.

Some simple cloth and rope physics would be great. Rope that visibly moves. Cloth that ripples in the wind that sort of thing. I would absolutely love to step out of my base and look up at my flag waving in the wind. Maybe a cloak that ripples behind me when I move. A bead rope door that jingles slightly when I enter the hippy love shack. That sort of thing. Doesn't have to be a huge amount of movement. Just a satisfying sway.

Just wondering if the devs considered it.

Rope and cloth physics can only mean one thing.

Rope physics would come in handy for electricity too!
This world be nice to have ingame if it doesnt lag much.

That is something that can definitely be done! Though we have to be worried about the worst case scenario. With SoA, players will be able to build any structures they want. And if a player places 10000 flags around his base, there's simply no way the game will be able to simulate that much cloth physics. Perhaps we only simulate the 10 or so closest flags and the rest just display themselves in a rigid fashion?

If you could freeze them that would be great.
From a cable perspective, most of them are suposed to be stationary anyway, and having them to stand bended would be epic even if "frozen".
    So yes, deffinitelly.
The flag waving being clientside may allow you to add an option for the ammount which would be simulated around you.
And maybe turn on the ones which interact physically only for the client or something like that.
    So for example:
    -10 closest flags move.
-I trow a ball at a flag far away.
-That flag activates and other one goes frozen on it's place.
-If i interact with more than 10... well... idk.
    Maybe they are just cosmectic.

But having cables and ropes to cutable would be nice too.
    Or make bridges.
    So many possibilities.

Definitely could be done using the bullet physics engine. Not a high priority right now, but it might be something that could be added fairly easily later since it is built into bullet.

    Two options.

    1) Your more than reasonable idea of having only so many at such a range.

    2) Not worry about it and server admins will remove stuff forceably when people get excessive. (minecraft servers do this all the time with IC2, RP2, BC, etc. mods)

Awesome, are we going to use these as electrical cables? (even if later)
That would be supercool and look even better.
Also be able to "glue" them to walls so you get the rigid ones if you want.

@SpaceHippie: Forcing stuff always sounds bad to me, flags can be as cheap as you want but they can't be free, and there is no point in making that many.
BUT if you have some kind of illness and for some reason do that, they will just get frozen as Ben said, which is fine for me.

No no. An in game method that limits the lag is better. But sometimes server admins have to get involved to keep down lag. Some people just get excessive that's all I'm saying. They have to know that one million flags per square kilometer will by hard on the system. But they do it anyway.

    Glorious.

Maybe have say 10 closest with full animation and rest with like 1-2 fps so you can see they are indeed moving and textiles really far away would be rigid?

yea this would be a good realistic thing but what would make the ropes and cloth out of just wondering.

Even if there are no furry animals on Aldrin that we can domesticate to get wool or fleece from, there's got to be some kind of plant fiber we can use.

The player's hair should be a last resort.

making cloth for my own hair that would be awesome. but gross as well.

We could use cotton to make fibers... Looms, strands, etc.

I doubt we'll use cotton. Aldrin ain't Earth. It's bound to have something similar though. It has trees and grass of sorts, so there's definitely a cellulose analogue available.

Who's this caveman walking up on my base? I'm gonna musketball him in the face.
    OH MY GOD!!
Did he just pull a phaser out of from under there.

    Silence.

    Textiles!
    Telephone wires!
I think it would be cool to see grass and other plants move with the wind too.
And sails that flap in the wind....

I agree with the textiles, telephone wires, and sails.
But grass and other plants would probably best served through set animation then actual physics. Just to lessen system resources.
