    Hello!

    Yesterday I was working on a test for "Parallax Displacement Mapping". Basically, it creates the illusion of geometry in a texture by moving pixels at different paces depending on how far they stick out. I'll list a few pros and cons here:

    Pros:
    • Voxels look more realistic, as if they have extra detail
    • Low performance cost
    Cons:
    • Heightmap texture has to be designed and loaded into video memory
    • Artefacts, since it is more of a hack than anything else
    Now I talked to Ben and Cristian about implementing this. Ben seems to be confident that texture loading is not going to be a problem, and Cristian says designing them won't require extra work. That leaves us with the artefacts. They become more visible the more you turn the effect up, and so it needs to be subtle, but I am happy with my results.

    Here are some videos, the top half of the video has normal mapping activated (which was already in the game), and the right half has the new parallax effect. Please note that the effect becomes stroner if you have control over the camera.

    EDIT: Copy from Ben: For those confused by the layout, the top right quadrant of the image is the final effect, the bottom left is no effect, top left is normal mapping only, bottom right is displacement only.

    For those confused by the layout, the top right quadrant of the image is the final effect, the bottom left is no effect, top left is normal mapping only, bottom right is displacement only.

    Wow, you can really see the (amazing) difference in the video with the bricks!

    Edit: Just watched the rock one in Fullscreen HD, and it looks incredible as well!
